To Whom This May Concern,
When I was around eight years old, my mother divorced my real father and with four children in tow, entered the United States from Canada by airplane. My mother was given custody of all four of us, married my stepfather, and had an American child.
According to what I read; Canadians were allowed to enter the United States without a visa and without a passport. My mother said that she was going to the United States and never received an I-94 (if I'm correct.) They never asked.
I entered the American school system because a law passed in the later 1980s, I believe, made it that a public school system could not deny anyone the opportunity to an education. I graduated in the class of 2007, with Beta Honors and ranked 11th in a class of 93.
I'm out of school and wish to continue my education at an American college. I also wish to place myself into the work force and become a citizen. I have been here for almost 10 years. However, without a visa or a passport and no way of getting one without having an original visa or passport - I cannot do any of the following. I do have an IRS tax number. I can pay taxes but without a job, I cannot. And without a greencard or work visa of some sorts, I cannot get a job.
I'm 18, turning 19 shortly. I'm married and have an American husband, who provides the funds for both of us.
There is nothing for me to return to if I had to go back to Canada, with the exception of a father I haven't seen in years and an Uncle. No way of making money and no way of having someone support me while I try to gather myself and get funds. A law was passed shortly ago that requires a passport in order to use planes as a way of transportation. Soon, there will be no way of me returning to Canada without a passport.
So, you understand my dilemma. I contacted the Canadian Embassy and they suggested I go to the INS and explain that I wish to extend my stay. What would you suggest I do?
Thank you so much for your time.
