  • Travel restrictions for Conditional Resident

I have read through the forum on the website and the relevant form (I -131) but I am bit confused.
    1. What documents are needed by a Conditional resident to travel outside US for < 1 year?
    2. Is it possible for a Conditional resident to travel outside of US for < 1 year without a reentry permit?
    3. How can a Conditional resident travel outside US for > 1 years but less than 2 years?
    4. If a Conditional resident stays out of US for > 1 year, does that affect his/her ability to apply for removal of conditional status and future citizenship?

Thanks a lot for your help. Much appreciated!

    1. What documents are needed by a Conditional resident to travel outside US for < 1 year?
    Passport & Green Card.
    2. Is it possible for a Conditional resident to travel outside of US for < 1 year without a reentry permit?
    Yes.
    3. How can a Conditional resident travel outside US for > 1 years but less than 2 years?
With an approved Re-entry permit (i-131)
    4. If a Conditional resident stays out of US for > 1 year, does that affect his/her ability to apply for removal of conditional status and future citizenship?
If he travels with his spouse, no problem to remove conditions (otherwise how can you leave your wife for 1 year and call it a marriage?) but ANY absence for more than 6 months WILL very likely break your residency counter for naturalization purposes and you will have to start over from ZERO days.

Thank you for your quick reply. Just a minor clarification needed on the answer to question 1.
A conditional resident to travel outside the country for < 1 year needs only the following 2 things: His/her conditional resident document (I guess it is I-551) and his/her non-american passport where the stamp of approval is.
      Is this correct?
      Thanks

That is correct. Either an I-551 stamp on the foreign passport or the physical green card AND the foreign passport.

Be advised though, some countries/airlines will not let you board the plane back to the USA with JUST the I-551 stamp and require you to show the physical green card instead.

          Thank you for your reply.
What can a conditional resident do to ensure that the country/ airlines does not prevent him/ her from boarding the flight with just the I-551 stamp and the foreign passport? Should he/ she get at re-entry permit just to prevent that possibility?
          Thanks again

The re-entry permit is not needed if the stay is shorter than 1 year. And still, the airlines may or may not allow the person to board the plane.

You need to contact the airlines you will be using and ask them.
