passport expiers in few months.

Hi,
My father's passport expires in october. I'm planning on applying for his greencard in february. since the process will take a while, I'm wondering if my dad can apply for his renewal of passport now?
I've searched in the internet about renewal and it looks like we can apply for the renewal only before 6 months of expiery.
If my dad doesn't renew now, can we renew it while the g.c is being processed?
Any answer would be appreciated.

must renew your passport now, otherwise he may not be granted permanent resident

I just figured out we can renew passport upto 12 months before expiration.
