  • name check and interview

I have applied for family based green card through my spouse, who is a USA citizen.I have filed for adjustment of status and have been finger printed. I also have an interview sheduled. I have couple of questions regarding the interview.
    1.What is name check?
2.What happens after the interview is done. If it issuccessful, do they issue the green card at the same time.?
    3. I am here in USA on H1 visa, I have changed my last name after marriage. I also got it changed in the drivers license but not on my social security yet. I applied for the green card with my new name. Will it effect my name check?
4.Typically if everything goes well in how many days will I get the green card?

    Hi there!

Here's what the info I can give you based on my own experience:
    1. Name check is part of the process for adjustment of status through which USCIS requests from the FBI to check on your background and make sure you don't represent a threat for this country.
    2. If the interview is successful and your name check process has been completed by the FBI the Immigration officer stamps your passport and tells you that the GC will be mailed to you in the next few weeks (not to exceed 60 days normally).
    3. I don't know. Maybe you could ask after the interview is done (?).
    4. Same as 2.
    Hope it helps.
    Good luck

Thanks for the reply. Do they do the name check before they call for the interview? or after the interview?

Also do they check for visa status during the interview? Like I was on H1 before I filed for adjustment of status.

        It all depends..

The name check starts when the AOS process starts. What we never know is when it actually ends (it can vary from days, weeks, months and even years). You can find detailed information about this on:

If the name check hasn't cleared by the day of your interview they will tell you to wait and you will not be a resident until it does so.

They will ask to see your H visa during the interview so don't forget to bring it with you. They won't check your status, they just want to see you entered in the US legally.
