I have a unique problem I need advice on. My ex-husband had been a legal resident here since 1980. Unfortunately, he had an alcohol problem and he left for his home country (Azores) in 2003. He has since gotten treatment. He had tried here, but to no avail..the rehabs here keep them a few days and that's it. He has had an extended hospital stay in the Azores. He had owed me child support. I went to the courthouse to have it all cancelled because he could not come back because of it. We have 2 children. We divorced in 2003. He has since missed so much (the kids' graduations, receiving of sacraments, our son was on American Idol this year, and many other things). He had filed his taxes before he left that year, but owed and did not pay. So this is almost hopeless.
I want the kids to have their dad in their lives. He had never said goodbye to them. Contact has been by phone once in a while. Needless to say, the relationship between him and the children is strained and I have spent many sleepless nights worrying. It hurts.
He feels he has conquered his problem. His doctors are willing to write letters on his behalf to attest to his hospital stays. He is ready and willing to pay the I.R.S. what he owes.
What are the chances he would ever be able to come back permanently?
Thank you.
