  • going out from usa for too long.

    i have green card. i am going to stay for long in india..but i dont want to lose my greencard.how can will i be able to do so. what requirments are for this?pls explain. actually i just got married there so for some family reason i will have to stay there for too long but i dont want to lose my green card what should i do.My parents live in usa. need advice..

    You can not be gone for longer than 2 years total.

      thanks for replying me .I know i cant leave usa for more than two years but i want to ask if i remain in usa for 4 month in every year than is it ok.? as my parents live here so i can live here atleast 4 month in a year.as i filed my husband on greencard and when he gets his greencard after 5 year we both will come here and live together.so i have 5 years to stay there long in india, and in these five i will come usa for 4 month in a year.pls advice. will it be enough to maintain residency status?

        You can't be here in 4 months every year, that would jeopardize your permanent residency. As the moderator told you, one time 2 year re-entry permit is possible and max. 6 months (180 days) out of the U.S every year, if you want to retain your green card.

        I understand your issues with the family separation too, good luck! If you are close to get your citizenship, you can speed up the family based green card.
