  • Visit from Canada, get married?

    Hi there,

I'm a Canadian citizen and my boyfriend is an American Citizen. We met online last year, and after I left my job in September (casual position, not enough hours) I visited him from October to boxing day. After I got back home I decided to go visit him again (on New Year's eve) since I didn't have a job yet. I was only going to stay a couple weeks, but I ended up staying just a little bit longer and a little bit longer until here we are in June and I'm still here. (He called Immigration customer service a couple months ago and they said I was entitled to stay 6 months because it was a new year and I went back home for a bit)

Last week we were talking about getting married. He called immigration again and they said that we could get married while I'm here and as long as I don't leave, I can stay with him while the papers are being processed. He also talked to a lawyer who said we would be fine doing that too. This sounds too good to be true, but I would be greatful if it would work!

I have a few questions: how complicated is it to file this way? Is it true I have to prove I wasn't intending on marrying him before I crossed the border? If so, how can I do that? Is it going to be difficult for me because I left my job before I went to visit him? Are they going to want to talk to my manager there? Because he's moved to another job since then and I don't know how to contact him. (Do they check old employers anyways?)

Should we hire a lawyer? The one we talked to was going to charge us $500 to check our forms before we filed them and give us some tips for the interview. Is that worth it?

    Thank you!
