Hi all,
I got married last month and need to apply I-130 for my wife. I have the following questions in regards to providing her biographic information:
1. her last name on her passport hasn't changed yet, should I change it to reflect her new marital status (i.e. give my last name to her)? I have heard that not doing so can cause hassle later on.
2. In case I do decide to change it on her passport, should I wait for the passport to be renewed before I send the I-130, or send it with the new name, since the passport will be updated in the near future anyawy (and I don't believe I need to send her passport information with the I-130)?
3. In case I put her current last name (her father's last name) in the biographic information, and later decide to change it on the passport, will it cause a discrepancy later on?
I hope I made myself clear. I just don't want to waste too much time getting her ID card (she's in Pakistan) and passport updated before I file her I-130. However, I don't want to get into trouble later on either. What is generally the best practice in this regard? (considering I have no particular interest in changing her last name otherwise).
thanks for keeping this extremely helpful forum alive,
