how long should one wait b4 filing for change of status?

I have a friend who came to the US on a fiancee visa. They got married before the 90 days and that was over a year ago. The husband (USC) still did not submit the needed documents for her to change status. Instead he threatens her saying she is illegal in the US and that she can be deported because she wanted to get out of the marriage. The husband has been treating her like a maid and threatens her with a gun every time they fight about this issue. Is there anything she can do to help herself? She is so scared he would kill her that she just lets him treat her that way. Thanks in advance for your ideas.

There is a visa category for battered spouse. Look into that. If she is a victim of domestic violence, ask her to seek help from the hundreds of organizations in the US.
