  • I-751

    Hi
I am filing an I-751 myself without the help of a lawyer. My question is: do the affidavits need to be written up on legal forms (that I would download from the Internet) or is it enough simply to go to a currency exchange and get the "affidavit" sworn and signed there?
    Thanks

    Seems like ...

... you'd need an attorney after all!

An affidavit can be written on any document and sworn in front of a notary.

I don't know how the currency exchange place comes into the picture here.

However, the very question itself suggests you need an attorney.

    Good luck.

Knowledgeable...YOu can get stuff notarised @ currency exchanges.

It's not rocket science. I think I can figure it out.. even the INS agent who dealt with my green card told me I could file on my own.

        Great ...

        ... good luck to you.

I can't comment on this as I'm not familiar with rocket science so cannot tell the difference. Unfortunately, I can't tell you my profession, else it might, well, we'll leave it at that ...

Again, good luck to you and all the very best.

Oh! By the way, wouldn't the notary know whether to use "legal" document or a regular paper? Just wondering.

          Notary

Since this dicussion, I have had both my affidavits notarised.

All that is required is a written statement by a person testifying to the authenticity of the marriage. The person giving the statement then takes it to a notary who stamps it, subject to the person providing proof of ID.

I offer up this information for others who are trying to do this on the cheap as I am. I was fortunate enough to have friends who worked with qualified notaries, but if not, one could always get a document notarised at a currency exchange.

          Very straightforward.

I used the sample affidavits on this site as a guide when drafting the affidavits.

          FWIW.
