  • can I go to another state for school while on temporary greencard ?

    hi there,

    I was wondering whether going to another state to finish a degree ( say, California for example ) will effect my temporary green card ? or would it effect the process of getting the real green card next summer ?

    here is a little more about the situation : my husband and I met in 2003, and got married in the spring of 2008. We had been living together ever since and he had been very hard working to support the family ( us and a fatty cat who eats more than both of us put together ! hehe) . But I really want to finish school and get the BA degree instead of the AA degree which I currently have . I went to a private art school and can't transfer the credits to another art school, so I thought going back to the same school to finish that 3D degree was a better idea-- even though it's in another state. I didn't think this would be an issue but my husband is afraid that it might cause problems in the future when we go back to apply for the real green card next summer.

    Since neither of us are knowledgeable in this matter, I was wondering if someone here would have advices or had been in similar situation and knows what to do ?

    thank you very much in advance !

    That is not a problem, as long as your marriage is genuine.

      While going to this school in another state, will your husband be going with you? If not the CIS may view you residing separately from husband as derogatory information and you would need to provide good evidence of a bonafide marriage during this separation to overcome the derogatory information.

        got to live together

        In theory, living separately shouldn't matter if you guys have enough evidence - in reality, you better live togher, or you will be in deep debt to pay for attoney and other things you guys need to fix. My husband and I had good reason to live separately and our attoney told us we would be find since we had prenty of proof. Well I (non-citizen) ended up in deportation process.

          hello, first of all, thank you for all the replies and suggestions , I really appreciate it =)

          to Arcticfox : no, my husband said he won't go anywhere until he finish his own degree ( and I have this crazy guess that we are in the same state )

          After posting this, my husband and I have had more discussions on the matter,while we both agree that finishing the degree would be the wise thing to do for me career wise, the fact we won't be living together during the semesters might cause problems even if I spent the holidays back home( this is what he was worried about, and after reading your replies it's hard for me to not agree with him .) One of the reasons I didn't think it would cause problem is that we met in an online game, and it wasn't till years later we finally met in person , and another half year later we got married. During the first interview where we got the temporary green card , the interview went super smooth ( we were kinda surprised how fast it took, and my husband thinks the reason is the interviewer plays WoW also ... ). So I kinda assumed being long distance relationship wouldn't cause problem this time neither ....

          But I really do want to finish the degree and have my own career going on ..... after being a house wife for over a year, it almost feels suffocating sometimes , and I don't want to picture myself in the future as a middle aged depressed housewife who's got nothing going on in her life and spends whole day watching tv and dreaming what I could have being ...

          btw I'm really sorry to hear what happened in your case Shieri55, I hope everything works out for you eventually ....

            updates =)

            hello everyone,

            I just wanted to thank you all again for the advice and that I have just received the green card this week =)

            Like one of the replies mentioned, as long as the marriage is genuine it shouldn't be an issue. During the interview, the lady did ask about the time we spent apart from each other ( we just couldn't pass up on the tuition rebate from the government, and took some classes in another state, hehe ) , but we ended up spending more time talking about my wedding ring than anything else (the interviewer was supprised to find out you could trade in your old ring and upgrade for a new one at one of the local jewelry stores. hehe )
