GC processing through US citizen

My husband's H1 is going to expire by Feb,2011. we didnt start greencard processing till now. My husband's brother is US citizen and he is willing to sponsor our Greencard. We checked online and could not find information regarding processing times(for brother).

Can we continue to stay in US if we start the process right now?

Please give us suggestions regarding this type of green card processing and share your valuable expriences.
