  • Immigrant Visa Without Surname

We are US green card holding couple, from India. We have a baby boy, who is born in India (citizen of India). We want to bring up our kid without influencing him with the biases and prejudices prevalent in today's society. So we are giving him only first name. He does not have family name (surname, last name) or middle name because they easily identify caste, religion and such. So he will be having only & simply 'the first name'.

Now, I like to sponsor him for green card. Is the application process for G.C. straight forward or do I need to submit additional forms / evidence for him?

Is it going to create any problem for him in future, in applying for SSN, enrolling in school, getting employed, bank accounts, credit history, home loans etc?

Last name is required at every place. Not having a last name is not allowed. If you just identify the person by first name and are somehow able to get the passport like that, that first name will become the person's last name, and his first name will be FNU. Do you really want your child's first name FNU?

He will have problems at every single place and will go through major hassles.

If you really don't want to put a real last name, as is commonly done in South India, put father's first name as the last name. That should do it.
