GC for parents

Me and my spouse are US citizens. My parents now in US on visitor's visa. Their VISA will expire in July 2010.
I want to apply GC for them. I don't think they have birth certificates. Do they need their birth certificates or an affidavit would do? They are 60+. How does it work?
