  • Marital status not updated in birth certificate

Hi, I am a U.S. citizen looking to sponsor my brother for a family-based greencard.

One of the required documents to sponsor sibling is "a copy of your birth certificate and a copy of your sibling's birth certificate showing that you have at least one common parent."

The birth certificate from our country of origin also shows marital status, where I appear as single. I am married to a U.S. citizen but due to an extremely bureaucratic process haven't been able to update my marital status in my country of origin's civil register.

Do you think submitting the application with a birth certificate that shows me as single (as opposed to married) presents any risks? Could that inaccuracy slow down the process, or even void the application?

    Thanks for any guidance.

Is your birth certificate dated before your marriage? I don't see a problem if this is the case.
I don't know how many countries do that (show marital status), I guess they just want to make sure that he is in fact your brother.
