  • Help me convince my parents, which category is better?

Alright could someone please write a clear suggestion on whether it's best for a 21 year old to be sponsored by a green card petitioner (parent), or to wait for the petitioner to naturalise. My petitioner is seeming to think for some reason that if they wait to naturalise it'll be more advantageous for me. Could someone write a clear paragraph countering or affirming this, and noting what categories I'd be in for each situation so that I may show them your message. Thanks.

I'll assume the child is unmarried. The waits in the F1 (unmarried over-21 child of citizen) and F2B (unmarried over-21 child of permanent resident) categories are not that far apart. Currently, F2B is slightly faster than F1. So for the petitioner to petition now before naturalizing is slightly more advantageous. If the petitioner naturalizes during the wait, it will automatically change to the F1 category, but for this particular upgrade (F2B to F1), it is possible to "opt out" of it and stay in F2B category even after the petitioner naturalizes.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.
