  • Awaiting Green Card to be mailed even after parents entering US

My parents are newly arrived immigrants to USA with temporary I-551 stamp which reads - UPON ENDORSEMENT SERVES AS TEMPORARY I-551 EVIDENCING PERMANENT RESIDENCE FOR 1 YEAR.

It has been 7 months but we are yet to receive the Green Card even though we have paid all the fees upfront. Are there anyone facing similar situations where the parents are still waiting for the GC to be mailed?

I would greatly appreciate if you can advise on the following :

    1. What happens if we dont receive the green card before the expiration of temporary I-551 stamp?
    2. Is there an option to renew temporary I-551 stamp while waiting for Green Card to be mailed?
3.What options do we have to follow up with USCIS regarding the status of Green card delivery

    1. Nothing. They were approved and admitted as permanent residents and that status does not expire. They can continue to live in the US permanently.
The main reason people get an I-551 stamp when they enter is so they can use it for employment, travel etc. till the greencard arrives in the mail.
There are significant delays with the printers that is causing the backlog.

    2. Yes. Call USCIS and request an appointment for another stamp. You need to have a valid reason (life and death emergency that requires them to travel, job may be terminated if they do not get the stamp, etc etc. )

    3. None.
Opinion only. Cannot be construed as legal advice.
