Passport Renewal and Greencard

Hello Everyone,

Currently I have Greencard, which I got through my wife, a US Citizen.

It is a conditional greencard which expires sometime during summer of next year. After which I will get an un-conditional greencard.

My Indian passport expires in Nov'2011. I read/heard somewhere that we can apply for renewal one year in advance.
Is that true? If yes, then would I affect my greencard records with USCIS? Or I can just apply for removal of condition with my new passport.?
