  • how would GC mom petition GC for 18 yo F-1 child?

My mom just got her GC - yay! We are thinking of petitioning for my sister who is currently 18, on a F-1 visa and studying in the USA. What might be the most efficient way to go about this? Thanks kindly in advance...

I'll assume your sister is unmarried. They should file I-130 (completed by your mom) and I-485 (completed by your sister) together. Then, your sister can stay in the US for as long as it is pending. They should also file I-765 for EAD and I-131 for Advance Parole together with those forms, to allow her to work and/or travel abroad while the I-485 is pending. Each of the applications will require many supporting documents and forms. For example, the I-485 will require an I-864 Affidavit of Support from the petitioner (your mom). If your mom's household income does not reach 125% of the poverty level, they can use a "joint sponsor" whose household income is enough (e.g. you, or a friend) to sign a second I-864.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.
