Hello. I hope someone can help me urgently. My uncle/aunt is immigrating to the USA soon. They were petitioned by my mother who is currently not living in the USA (she is in a US military base in Germany) but she has a permanent address in Washington so she told my uncle to use the Washington address as their permanent address and also to send the green card and social security.
So my uncle and his wife is coming to America in a few weeks and their port of entry is in Seattle and staying with my sister for a few days before he lives with me in Chicago until my mother comes back this summer (note: he thinks he would like to live in Chicago)
1) Should he immediately file for a change of address from Washington to Chicago? Should he immediately get a State ID and also file for SS# in person? Is that questionable if he chose not to live with the petitioner immediately (especially since there is no choice, my mother is not in the USA right now). What happens to the green card or even SS# if what's filed in NVC is the Washington address, will it go to the new address in Chicago if he files?
2) Should he not file a change of address and instead return to Washington when my mother gets back there and wait for the SS# and green card to go there (maybe even get a Washington State iD)? Then decide later to return to Chicago and establish a permanent address here... So basically his initial stay in Chicago is just a visit so maybe no filing of change of address is necessary?
What is the best thing to do? I don't want him to be questioned (we've been waiting for him for over 20 years) and I also don't want his documents to be lost in the mail because there is no one to receive it in Washington until my mother gets back during summer break (July). My uncle is due to arrive around February.
Please help us. We don't know what is the right way to take. Thank you.
