Marriage certificate question

I am a sponsor for my mother's green card.
My parents marriage was never registered as it was way back before 1950.
My mother is a widow.
In which case is the death certificate of my father is sufficient?
Or the marriage certificate is mandatory. It is tough to get even the affidavit done as anyone older at the time of their marriage is not living anymore.

Please let me know.

Thank you very much for this information. Somehow this is not mentioned clearly anywhere on USCIS instructions/website. Any link to the site where this information is located is really appreciated.

I have already got I-130 approved.

My question was more for the documents submission with DS-230 (Immigrant Visa Application). Do the same rule apply for that as well?
