A good friend has asked me to be a joint sponsor for her and to submit an affidavit of support (I-864) on her bahalf. She's concerned her husband hasn't sufficient means to be her sole sponsor. I feel a little bit nervous about undertaking this obligation, as I've no idea if she'll ever attain citizenship, which would thus end my sponsorship. It's unclear to me from what I've read to date exactly what my exposure might be. I guess if the government funded moneys that were means tested, they could then come after me for reimbursement. I've also read she herself could sue me for support. What exactly, though, does that mean, and how likely is it/how frequently are obligations of sponsors legally enforced?
