I-140 Approved 4 months ago, waiting on AOS, EAD expiring

So my greencard was approved 4 months ago, we were told by our lawyer that the adjustment of status was a formality so don't bother renewing Visa/EAD. The adjustment hasn't come through and when I called there was no information they can only put in a request.

How does that affect my works status and green card when the EAD expires next week?
