I-140 telephone status

I have applied for my I-140 in Oct 2000.
My attorney got the recipt from INS (vermont) that
the recipt date for my I-140 application was Oct 6th 2000. It also has the case number

When I call the INS (vermont) number to check my status (802-527-4913) I get the message
"This case number cannot be found"

What does this mean? Has anyone got the same reply from INS ?

You might not have punched the right buttons or your attorney might have messed up the numbers.

Are you sure you're using a touch tone phone?
If yes.. make sure you are entering the whole number (which contains alphabets & digits).

You may be leaving the first three letters/digits out (SRC which corresponds to 772 on your dialpad).
Make sure when you are punching the numbers you enter the following number:
7728025274913

I do not think this is the correct ans to check the status from VSC , first you have to dail 1+8025274913 then listen to message and punch your EAC-01-05x-0000( your reciept no)
