Handing over your passport

Hi everyone!

I have finally got everything together and am ready to send off my I-130. I am just wondering when/ if I will have to hand my passport over to get the visa added? I am planning to go away in the summer and don't want to be without my passport if I hand it over and have to wait a length of time to get it back. If for example I have to give it up at the Interview can I delay the interview until after my vacation or will that result in me losing my $420 I have to pay when sending in the I-130 and having to start all over again?
