Travelling outside USA without plastic Green Card

I am immigrating to USA in month of October-2014. I want to come back from USA within two weeks to complete my obligation. As I came to know that Green card takes usually 6 to 8 weeks for plastic green card. Can I travel outside USA without palstic green card & reenter USA again within USA. Appreciate early feedback.

If you get the I-551 stamp/annotation in your passport upon entry to the U.S., you are considered to have proof of Permanent Resident status from one year of the annotation and can reenter the U.S.
