Pls. help ! Interview date at Mumbai

I have an interviw date at Mumbai (Consular processing).

Can I postpone the date by 8-10 days? Do I need to inform them well in advance or Can I inform them just a day before so that I can try my level best to manage the same date ?

How do I inform ? by mail or by phone ?
