I'm a US Citizen and am currently waiting for my I130 Petition for a relative (my spouse) to go through. I am filing taxes as married for the first time but haven't decided if I should do it jointly or separately from my spouse. He has never lived or worked in the U.S. and we were married at the end of 2005 in Canada. I returned to the States but my spouse is still abroad waiting for the consular processing. The tax form program I am using insists that I enter a SSN or Tax ID number for my Canadian spouse who doesn't have one yet. Is there a way to get an ID number before the process is complete? How can I get around this line item on the tax form? Any helpful advice would be much appreciated.
