Processing time p1 visa and visiting parameters

Can a Canadian citizen enter America with a p1 (professional athlete) visa currently processing? My professional team submitted my application 7 days ago, when should I expect it to be processed? In the meantime can I enter America to visit a friend without having to leave the country when the application is approved?
