Yes, it can be postponed.

They way you would do that is by writing (emailing) to the American Consulate (where you case is being handled) and REQUEST them to postpone your interview date.

I did a similar thing i.e. i deferred by interview date by a month.

I also included a cover letter in my Packet 3 requesting the Consulate to assign me an interview date in the month of June '02 (if not, i wud have been given a date in May '02)

It is just a advice: (not legal though)

- Please try NOT to POSTPONE the interview as much as possible. The reason is in the current circumstances people are so desperate to get one and just finish this off. It is a lifetime thing.

If you still chose to postpone, the consulate decides and lets you know. You can only suggest I guess the date that you want. Don't be choosy there aswell.
