Returning passport ..help !!!

Hello all,
On the day when we are applying for the visa at the consulate, is it possible to have our passport back by requesting them (in case if they keep our passport with them) immediately by telling them that I have to go to another country for work or vacation whatever ?

I am aware that its possible to have it back after few days (during their processing time, which is uncertain), But is it possible to get it back on the same day immediately and then get back our passport to them to stamp the visa, once they are through with their processing and have apprroved our visa.
