Can I do background check here myself? Would it be same as what consulate does?

    Background Check

Yes you can. You can submit a fingerprint card to the FBI and have them do a criminal record search and eport the results to you.

It is not the same as the consulate check as it is a fingerprint based check and the consulate does a name based check (and also checks against watch lists of terrorists and undesirables even if they have no criminal record).

        background check

        Yes they can.

Lets imagine your name is John Smith and you were born in London on 17th Sep 1967. It is possible (since names are not unique) that there was another person named John Smith born in London on the same date. It is also possible that person could have committed serious crimes in the US. A name check for your name, place and date of birth could show the crimes committed by this other person.

However this is a rare occurrence. And in this case you could deny that it was you and the Consulate may take your prints and do a more exhaustive check.

Fingerprints are unique to you however and only your record would show up (assuming you had one).
