  • Past CPers : OF230-Part II question

    Hi,

In OF230-Part-II Q31 it is asked if you want a social security card issued to you.
Should one always say NO to that question if one already has a
SSN card ? I was thinking this is probably for folks coming to the US
the very first time (family-based immigrant visa). I think if one answers YES then
a new SSN number would be assigned to you and you probably don't want that.
    Am I right ?

I would like opinions on what is the right anwer for each of the following :
Husband: Employed and with SSN card.
Wife: Not employed and with SSN (Not valid for employment)
    2 kids: No SSN card

Of course, if one says NO for all one can still come here and apply for it at the
local Social Security office. Anybody with experience on which is a faster way
to get the SSN card ?

I have answered yes to that question. My reasoning: a new card is necessary to get rid of the "Valid only with INS authorization" restriction.
The day after I entered I went to the SS Office and had the restriction removed. So it certainly does not hurt to say yes there.
And you should get a SSN for all family members, including the kids.
