Case info : EB2, AC-140 - mumbai consulate.
Completed interview on 1st march 2001. Got the immigrant visa.
The process was smooth but the consular officer - an indian lady
at mumbai consulate was not cooperative at all.
The documents she asked for were:
* birth certificates and notorized translations since the
certificates were in gujarati.
* marriage certificate (original birth and marriage certificates
were returned - she kept only photocopies)
* notorised letter of employment offer
* I-134 - affidavit of support for my wife (FYI - she is working)
Consulate gave the sealed envelope with immigrant visa (canceled
old H1s for me and my wife) same day evening.
Note :
------
Since my case was AC-140, I carried I-824 receipt but the consular
officer didn't ask for it.
Ran into a problem at mumbai airport immigration. The officer
asked for police certificate and income tax clearance certificate in
addition to passport and the sealed envelope given by american consulate.
I didn't have either since mumbai consulate does not require
police certificate so I didn't carry one and I have been working
in US for past four and half years. Anyway, I didn't even know the list
of documents they can ask for when you are travelling on immigrant visa
for the first time. I am still not sure whether the documents were
really required or the officer was making mistake or he wanted to
pain and gain. At some point he almost asked to go and get the documents.
Finally he stamped our passports as if he was doing us a big favor.
At the end he indirectly asked for money also (he asked
"aise hi jayenge kya ?") ... I pretended as if I have not understood
what he meant and he could not be explicit since there were so many
people standing in the queues and can very well see what he was doing.
Note : one thing for sure - these people have ego/attitude problem
so do not argue with them aggressively.
