  • Hello folks,
My mother immigrated to US about a month ago and I am in the process of shopping for health insurance for her. I wanted to check what other folks who have immigrated recently done. As part of the research on this, I read that if you take government subsidy for your insurance premiums, technically speaking, you are a charge to the state. This is something if the government wants can enforce through deportation or denying citizenship in future. It seems that this hasn't been enforced until now but could be in future. What have folks done? The subsidy is very significant, so it is very tempting but at the same time, I don't want to take on new problems as at this point, there is no place for my mother to return to in India.

Appreciate the insights of this group. If any of you are aware of any other groups where this question is more appropriate, please suggest.

      Hi Maneeshsah,
If your mother is a govt. pensioner or earning any rental income from India, you can show it as source of income from India. We did the same. For me pension and for my wife rental income and took the health insurance from KaiserPermanente through Marketplace.

For more details please visit Marketplace website.

Filed for mom but she was DQ only August 15th, so It looks like it will be a while before she will get her IL. Lost my dad end of august so it is a bit hard to have her alone, and want to bring her here for a few months while we wait. She has been to the US before >10 times. Let me know if you have any inputs based on your experience. thank you.
          Hi vmsk0716,

As always AlienKanpur has already covered it very well. Like your mom, my mom had also visited us multiple times, so I see zero questions asked at PoE. Since most of the scanning gets done at the self-service Kiosk in my mom's case no questions were asked by the officer. At the most it will be the usual qus - purpose ; how long ; where are you staying.

          • HI all,

            DQ Date : 08-Dec-2021

            Interview Date : 27-Dec-2022

My mother finished her fingerprints and medical hyd on Nov 21st. They have mentioned that the chest X-ray is not normal but it has nothing to do with Tuberclosis.
They also told that they will be sending the reports to the counsalte and inform us back if there are any queries. So far we have not heard back from them since past 10 days.

She came back home and got herself checked and her CT of lung and heart are normal. Thank God!!!

I have emailed the HYD CMM office but no response yet.

Any input on how we can make sure that we are good to go for our interview on Dec 27th?

            Thank you!!! Sandhya

              Dear Sandhya,
in case there is no advise for a sputum test, we should assume that all is clear. I guess you are good to go for the interview. Another senior member sapnaanagol can add something, in this connection. There are some more members of the forum who went through the arduous process of the sputum test. In all cases it was immediately advised. Best wishes.

                Dear Atmakur61

Congratulations to you for getting GCs fast. Your idea of connecting with nearby IR5 immigrants is an excellent initiative. Even we all, new imigrants, can think of getting connected through a social platform like ******** to share our issues and solutions like Health Insurance, tax liabilities in India & USA, adjustments in new life over here, work opportunities etc. In nutshell, making our life more meaningful and social after leaving our own world behind in India. We all can share our stories strictly avoiding regular forwards of greetings ,videos, political issues etc. As this platform is mostly for pre-immigration issues, views and opinions of our senior members like AlienKanpur, GeoMac, Sapnaanagol and other members are expected for such a forum of post immigration issues.

                • Hi Members
I reached the US on 3rd Nov and having waited for almost a month I went to SSA office today to enquire about my SSN. They advised me to apply there and then after checking in their system and confirming that it is not under processing. I have submitted the application in SSA office in New Jersey while my physical address is SFO but no issues. Expecting in 2 weeks time to receive the SSN.
Going by the previous posts concerning non-receipt of SSNs, it seems that the SSA is not processing the SSNs based on DS-260 wherein SSN is opted for.

This page specifically lists that Medicaid would not be considered when taking into account public charge: https://www.uscis.gov/green-card/gre...arge-resources

"Q14: What public benefit programs does USCIS not consider? *

A14: Generally, we do not consider noncash benefits in making public charge determinations. The only noncash benefit we consider is institutionalization for long-term care at government expense. We also do not consider special-purpose cash assistance not intended for income maintenance.

Common examples of noncash benefits include:

Medicaid and other health insurance and health services (other than support for long term institutional care), including public assistance for immunizations and for testing and treatment of symptoms of communicable diseases, health clinics, short-term rehabilitation services, and emergency medical services;"

                    • Dear Community,

My parents interview is scheduled for January 11th (Mumbai). Both applicants future address in USA and petioner (my address in USA) is changed. I notified NVC via AskNVC and got the response that they have cleared the file and now it is up to embassy/consulate to change the address.

When parents went for biometrics they informed them but they said to inform the Mumbai consulate. What are our options, its crucial that our GC does not get lost when posted.

Any one in similar situation who was successfully able to change the address?

                      Thanks
                      Sanjay

                      • Specifically directing this to members who have already obtained health Insurance from health exchange marketplace. How many days does it take to get coverage after you apply for insurance (upload pension documents and fill online application).
If my father's date of entry is Jan 24, will there be enough time for exchange to process our application so that the insurance starts from Feb 1? Would you advise coming earlier (since insurance always starts from 1st of the next month).

I appreciate any insight that group members can provide from experience. I want to minimize the time my dad is on visitors insurance and start the proper insurance as soon as possible after arrival.

                        Thanks

                          Hi,
Generally, Health Insurances policies in India will start from the date of payment we make. As you know in US it starts from 1st day and ends on last day of month. So if we purchase any time in this month it start from 1st Jan 2023.

For purchase of Health Insurance through Marketplace or some other first we need SSN. SSN will be issued after we enter USA. It will take 2 to 3 weeks time. In our case it is almost took 1 month of PoE that too after visiting and apply in person at local SSN office (Selecting for SSN in DS-260 form is not working in many cases). This is want I personally experienced. Thank you.

I do have a question to track my mom's green card status - how and what needs to be done? What is the receipt number that I should use, if I need to use this website - https://egov.uscis.gov/casestatus/mycasestatus.do

                            Thanks in advance.

Update - my Mom's Social Security card came in the mail within 1 week of her entry to USA. The SSN came to the new address that she had the officer change at the Port of Entry.

Dear Atmakur61 , Thank you for your response. I am a bit surprised because my health exchange insurance broker told me that we do not have to wait for SSN and we can provide that later. She said we only need date of entry. Maybe this requirement is different for different states - I am in Washington. She also said that after submitting application the processing can take a while - so if I apply on Dec 28, coverage may not start on Jan 1.
