Police Clearance Certificate VS Background Check

Is a “Police Clearance Certificate” the same thing as getting a “Background Check”?

I know a “Background Check” in Maryland requires:
(1) Having your fingerprints taken by a police department on an official fingerprint card
(2) Submitting the completed fingerprint card to Maryland State Police
(3) Waiting for a letter that says you have a clear background (no criminal history/past)

I work in a Call Center that fields a lot of general questions from our County residents.
I want to be sure when they ask for a “Police Clearance Certificate” that I’m giving them
the correct information.
