  • Immigrant Visa Issues

Hi - my mom received approval for her green card at the end of last year. She was issued an immigrant visa expiring in 6 months from her medical. Unfortunately, she was unable to travel to the US within that 6 month window. But on inquiring with the embassy, she was told that she will need to giver her medical again and that would kick off the process to get a new immigrant visa. She followed their instructions, got the medical cleared, but there has been no progress at all on the visa front. She visited the embassy as well and they sent her back with no information at all. Anyone has had any experience with this and how to obtain a new immigrant visa so she can visit the country and get her green card?

    Thanks!

For the benefit of others, got the below response from the consulate:

Greetings from the U.S. Consulate General Mumbai.

We understand that the you were unable to use their immigrant visa before the expiry date and wish to know if the visa validity can be extended.

Issued immigrant visas are generally valid for six months or until the medical exam results expire, whichever is shorter. If an applicant does not use an issued immigrant visa within its period of validity and proves to the satisfaction of the consular officer that he/she did not use the visa because of reasons beyond his/her control and for which he/she was not responsible, a replacement visa may be issued on payment of new visa processing fees and submission of updated supporting documents, as required.
Applicants who are applying for a replacement of their unused visa will need to log in to http://www.ustraveldocs.com/in and select “Consulate Appointments” to schedule a visa appointment.

For extension of an expired visa, applicants should bring the following:
    • Fees of $325, which must be paid by international credit card or in cash. Please carry exact change if paying in cash. As the consular rate of exchange can change, refer to https://ustraveldocs.com/in/step-3 the day before your interview to obtain the current consular rate of exchange. Consular fees are not refundable.
    • DS-260 confirmation page
    • Two recent photographs (2 x 2 inches)
    • As Medical reports are valid for six months, and in certain cases three months. The visa is only valid for the duration of the medical report’s validity. On the day of the appointment, the beneficiary will be given further instructions for re-medicals.
    • Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) from the Regional Passport Office is valid for two years from the date of issuance, therefore, in case of expiry, beneficiary will be provided instructions to obtain a new PCC.

The beneficiary will not need to repeat biometrics.

To receive any further response to additional inquiries, please email [email protected] from your registered email id. If you are writing from an unregistered email id you will need to create an account on http://www.usvisascheduling.com/ and “Sign up now” to view our response.
Alternatively, they can call our customer service desk on +91 22 62011000, or **-703–520-2239 (calls from the United States).

We hope this information is helpful to you.
