J2 Drug tests?

I am a writer who is here on a J-2 dependents visa. I just applied for a work permit, (Oct 15th, 2011) paid the fees and am awaiting the next step. Please don't judge me but I have been a medical **** user for the past ten years in Europe. I know I will have to take a urine test to be certified with a work permit. Can anyone tell me at what stage I will have to undergo the test? Will it be after the waiting period has ended (3-5 months) or nearer the beginning of the processing period. I am currently abstaining from usage though this is causing me pain (arthritis) but I am worried that I will be tested sooner rather than later.

You don't have to take any medical test for J2 EAD.

In any case, if you were taking anything that the physician prescribed, its fine. You just have to produce the proof.
