  • travel/work in USA for 3 months

    Hello,
I’m hoping to receive some advice regarding a small trip I’m looking to do from December ‘14 to February ‘15.
I’m an Australian citizen who is currently studying and working part time, I have just turned 21 and have always wanted to travel to the US. Please could you advise me of the most economic, safe and reliable way I can stay in the US for 3 months? If there’s any possible way I could do some work whilst tourist- ing I would like to take that opportunity, as I mentioned I’m only working part time so I probably can’t support myself for three months abroad without some extra funding.
Thank you for taking time to read this email, I look forward to your reply.
    Kind regards,
    Brooke Rolfe

    Brooke,

You can't legally work in the U.S. while here on a tourist (B2) visa. For a legitimate employer to hire you, a U.S. Social Security Number (SSN) is required, as well as verification of your U.S. residency or birth status, else the employer risks significant fines.

Having said that, there are legal ways one can continue to meet ordinary financial requirements without actually being on a business payroll: housesitting, assisting someone as a companion, and/or providing services for "in-kind" benefits (meals, transportation, discounts).
