  • passport machine readable code smudged a little

I got a new passport after splitting the surname. Everything looks good except a little smudging (due to the lamination on the print) on the bottom machine readable code on the first page. I am supposed to travel to US as soon as possible on H1-B. Will this smudge create any issues. (There is NO problem in any other fields).

Do i need to ask for a passport reprint? (I went to the passport office and they told, this is OK. But, they don't have the machine to check the machine readable code, so since the code was readable quite fine they are confident).

    Please help.

It is the safest to get the new passport which does not have such problem.

You never know where you will get into the problem, at the airport in India, at the intermediate airport in Europe, Middle East etc. or at the port of entry in the U.S.

You should ask them to get it fixed as soon as possible as it is their mistake.

I went to the to Regional passport office, they told there is no issue in the passport since it is quite readable, they also added that, this is seen these days in the passport due to the new kind of ink and none has complained yet. They are saying, this doesn't qulaify as damaged. They told they wont reissue a new one.

I am not sure what to do.

            Hi,
I have exactly the same issue. Passport office doesn't respond. What did you do? Were you able to travel with smudged machine readable code?

Did you finally get your passport replaced or were you awarded Visa with that passport?

Why can't they just print passports normally..... I just renewed my passport after tons of effort. But the "place of birth" and "place of issue" fields on the new passport are smudged a little (you can still read it). It seems like these fields are not that important, but I'm still worried. It also seems like this whole smudging thing has been a problem for a while. What's the deal - do they not have good printers here in their US consulates??
