Passport renewal speedup

I submitted my passport renewal application mid Nov 2012 and I am waiting to get my new passport. Since I'm planning to travel to India on Dec 24, I called up VFS in SF to ask about my application status and explained the situation to them. They said that they are expecting 5-6 weeks processing times now and if I want to speed up processing I should visit the VFS office in person with my airline ticket and speak to the supervisor. Does this approach help? It would be great if anyone could share their personal experiences here and also other ways that helped to speed up their passport processing.

To summarize, I would really appreciate it if someone could respond with the following information -

- Average processing times for passport renewal in SF india consulate at this time of year.
- If it possible to speed things up in any way, eg visit the consulate in person with proof of airline ticket.
