Passport Expired over 6 months ago

Hi,

I live in the USA and my wife's passport has expired over 6 months ago. We did not notice that as she was busy with her exams.
I am planning to renew the passport and in the requirements they want us to submit a reason why we did not renew it for so long. What would you suggest?

Should i just tell the truth saying that e were not aware or is there any other better way of putting it across.

Please send me some ideas.

You didn't realise it had expired. That's all you need to tell them.
