  • OCI, PIO, or both?

    Hello,

I'm an Indian who has recently become an Australian citizen, and I am yet to apply for either an OCI or PIO card. I anticipate having to travel to India fairly soon, however, (sooner than the 3-4 month waiting period for an OCI card). Does anyone know if it's possible for me to apply for a PIO card in order to do my travel within the next few months, and then ALSO apply for an OCI card at the same time so that I can have it upon my return to Australia? Or if I apply and receive a PIO card, does anyone know if it's possible to then apply for an OCI card later?

    Thankyou for your help!

Just apply for PIO card. It is good for 15 years.

OCI card rules are messed up now. And no one (including Indian Consulate) knows the exact rules they are supposed to follow. There is a different version of rules every now and then about having to apply for OCI card again and again every time you get a new passport which is every 10 years. What is the use of "lifelong" OCI? No one knows.
