  • Are my husband and daughter eligible for an OCI card?

I'm of Indian origin. I was born in India and me and my family immigrated to New Zealand in the late 90s. I'm now a NZ Citizen. I just got my OCI card last year. It was such a hassle. I had to pay a fine for not surrendering my old passport . I had wanted to keep it as a souvenir of all my travels. Anyway, I have a question which I was hoping to get an answer to. The Indian High Commission in NZ doesn't even have a phone number so I can't get in touch with them. I want to know if my husband and daughter are eligible for an OCI card. My husband is NZ European and my daughter is half Indian/half European. We're planning on taking a trip to India at the end of this year. I know that they can get a 'visa on arrival' but that only lasts for a month and we might be staying longer. Applying for a normal visa is annoying, and I don't want to do that every single time.

    1. When you surrender Indian passport, they just cancel it and return it back to you. They don't keep it with them.

    2. Your husband is NOT eligible for OCI but for PIO card.

    2. Your daughter is eligible for OCI but I don't recommend that you get it. Even though they claim OCI is lifelong, you have to get her a new one every time she gets a new passport, which is usually every 5 years for the kids. Instead go for PIO card which is 15 years.
