Applying for Indian visa

I'm in process of applying for Indian visa (have US passport). The visa application online asks for a photo upload. It doesn't say what happens if you don't upload a photo. Can I still submit a printed photo along with a printed copy of the application or do I have to upload a soft copy before printing the application?

Don't toy with the Indians. They're troublesome even if you DO follow all the rules, so not following a rule will only give you more trouble.
