Do I need an exit permit to leave India ?

Do I need an exit permit to leave India? I am a British Citizen with a PIO.
I have been staying in India since the last 2 Years.I registered with the Police
at the end of the 5th Month after arrival.I am visiting UK for a few months.
Do I need an exit permit for this brief visit ? I did get my application signed
when I registered myself,but didn't get an acknowledgement letter,is this normal?
I will be permanently shifting back to the UK after an Year.
Kindly advice.
