  • BLS New York / Renunciation

I sent in a renunciation request last week to the NY office of BLS. It was received today by BLS and their tracker updated to show that they are waiting for a document check. Now that I look back, I have a couple of questions:

    1. I included the printed return airbill from fedex (+ a copy) but I did not include an empty Fedex envelope. Since these envelopes are free, I hope the BLS guys will pick one up and stick the airbill in the pouch. Maybe I am expecting too much from these guys?

    2. I included the 250 dollar penalty in the cashier's check (total = 282.70) because I did not renounce my indian passport within 3 years of becoming a US citizen. I hope this is the right amount.

A second unrelated question -- I want to apply for a visa once I get the renunciation form back from BLS. I will be traveling in July to India, but also need to go to a different country in first week of June for an important event. Have these guys cleaned up their act enough for me to risk submitting a visa application in late march or early april (assuming the renunciation comes through) or will I be risking my early June trip?

Ok - just posting an update. The renunciation certificate was mailed back to me today within the 15 business day processing time quoted on the site. Apparently including the airbill (without the envelope) is enough. Overall, my experience has been pretty positive. Now to apply for the visa ...
