OCI and PIO cards being replaced with a new card?

I was getting ready to apply for a PIO card for my US citizen wife and came across this article.

I would hate to spend money on a PIO card and then again if we have to get a newer card.

Any thoughts from the members here?

I read that article and it does not give any useful details.

We would really need to know what the actual bill is and what finally gets approved. After that, it depends upon how they are planning to implement it.

If they are going to just allow people to replace PIO or OCI with the new card at a nominal fee with an easy process, that should be fine. However, if you have to apply all over again with all the documents and the entire procedure as if you never had anything, that would be too bad. However, without knowing that crucial fact, it is difficult to make any comments.

For now, I would just say apply for what you need and then see how things are working out for everyone.

Any further updates on this issue? I'm not able to find any new information online for this OCI / PIO merger; all articles are 3-4 months old. I wonder if the new Indian govt. is still going to pursue this change. If anybody has found recent updates please share. Thanks!
