  • can I travel with passport "Extended by the issue of fresh booklet"?

My current passport has 2 more years validity and I've got valid business US visa on it. It has an ECR stamp and old address and signature. Hence, Per suggestion from passport customer care executive, I've applied for reissue of passport. At PSK, my current passport has got "extended by issue of fresh booklet" stamp on it.

The status of new passport says "Passport application has been granted to applicant on YYYY . Your application is under processing. You would receive an e-mail/sms once the passport is dispatched". It's been 3 weeks since I've applied and no signs on passport yet. I need to travel to us in a week's time.

    My questions are

    1. Can I travel with my existing passport but with a stamp of "extended by issue of fresh booklet" on it? It has validity for another 2 years and valid US Visa on it?

    2. I didn't find any help about the meaning of "Extended by the issue of fresh booklet" anywhere. I've tried calling Passport seva kendra, Regional passport office but no help. please guide me to the location if you know about this.

Nevermind, I got the solution. For everyone's help, here is the required info.

Answer for Question 1: You cannot travel with passport which has "Extended by the issue of fresh booklet" stamp on it, though it has validity for few more years. It will be considered as "Cancelled" passport.

I went to Regional passport office for enquiry and was told the above statement. In order to get the new passport quickly, I was suggested to convert my normal application to Tatkal mode by paying a penality of Rs. 2000. The passport officer will ask you the reason for urgency and requires the documentary proof that supports the same. In my case, I need to attend a conference in US and produced the conference invitation letter and supporting letter from my employer.

Once the above proofs are submitted and paid the penality, the DPO will approve your passport and will print it on the same day. Your passport will be in your hand the very next day. I went to RPO yesterday and got my passport through speedpost today.

Unfortunately, this info is not available with anyone. You need to go to RPO, spend about 8 hours to get this resolved. Hope it helps.
