  • OCI : Name mismatch in Indian passport and US passport

    Hi

Sometime back in SFO OCI process there was an option to publish the name in indian news paper and US news paper followed by an affidavit. I do not see that option now.

I see only below three options now in SFO OCI.

    1. Marriage Certificate showing the name change if the name was changed at marriage.
2.Official court order for the name change
    3. Endorsement of name change during naturalization process.

Is that option not available now ?. What are my options if the above three is not applicable ?.

Is anyone facing challenges related to name mismatch ?.

can someone please share their experience from the recent past.

    appreciate your response.

The question is why is your name different and also, how different? Give us additional details so we can help you.

First of all for most of us, the name in the Indian Passport and our birth certificate/Degree Certificate is different. Name change started there and we were ignorant then without knowing the consequences of it during OCI/PIO. We were just happy we got our passport. For me my full name was in the GIVEN NAMES and my father's name was in the SURNAME of the passport. For those who had only one name in India, they might end up getting passports without SURNAME or their Father's name will become their SURNAME. So name change happened here as well. Your birth certificate and indian passport names don't match. Which court in INDIA issued a NAME Change Certificate? So new youngsters applying for Indian passports in India don't allow passport agency/agents to write any other name other than what is your birth certificate.
Foreign countries assume that whatever name is in your passport is your name. IGNORANCE costing us pain here. Oversight is everywhere throughout this process and finally when you apply for OCI/PIO oversight has disappeared. Now you are one person with two different names.

Then I came to the US. Immigration took the first name of the GIVEN NAMES as first name and the last name of the SURNAME as last name (because my full name is 30 characters long in the passport because it has my three names and my father's three names). So, this caused another name change/discrepancy. So I have been carrying my first name and my father's last name as my full name in the US (SSN, GC, NC and US PP) - btw this is not my original/birth name. Immigration just dropped or allowed me to drop middle names. IGNORANCE/OVERSIGHT here. No name change certificate provided by any court/institution here. But people with one first name and one last name (most likely their initial got converted to last name with the initial expanded) will not have the issue here. But for others now you are one person with 3 different names (birth certificate name, Indian Passport name & US SSN etc name).

Finally you applied and got GC, after 5 years you became naturalized citizen and got US passport with the name that was changed during Immigration/naturalization process.

Now when you apply for PIO/OCI/Indian Visa as naturalized US Citizen you are asked to provide a name change certificate from a COURT to renounce your Indian Citizenship. Where will you go? Name change from which name to which name? Which court will consider that you did a name change?

Hope this explains the problem that most of the former Indians (especially who and their father's had multiple names not just one) are facing during Renunciation.

I just got an email from them stating that they need a signed consent letter to edit the names on the application. Where do i get this document and will any consent letter work for this?
